The purpose of this site is twofold: to provide information and resources for people who are planning a kitchen project and to introduce clients to my kitchen design business. In 1996 I co-authored the book "Kitchens That Work" with my brother Martin. It was published by Taunton Press, and continues to sell well today. The basic premise of the book is that a good kitchen design had to be based on the specific lifestyle of the people who would be using it. Sounds simple, but it's amazing how many designers don't really look at how their customers live and work in their kitchens. I tend to look at these projects as major (and potentially traumatic) events in peoples lives and it makes sense to get things right in the beginning.
I have been involved in the construction and design fields for over 30 years (since I was 20). For the last 15+ years I have had a combination design studio and custom cabinetry shop, which really allowed me to approach each job as a one-of-a-kind project. Unfortunately, that style of business came to and end for me a few years ago, as it became harder to make money fabricating cabinetry. My focus now is on design and consulting work. I help customers with planning, problem solving, and finished design. A lot of my work is in helping clients navigate through the many facets of this complex room: traffic flow, materials, electrical and plumbing systems, lighting, style decisions, etc. I interface with architects, engineers and contractors where the job calls for it.
In both my business and in the information on this site I'm striving to give people real-world advice that goes beyond hype and the latest trends. I want clients to feel satisfied that they will end up with a beautiful and functional room regardless of the size or scope of their project.
